FRANCISCO FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP WINNE= RS ANNOUNCED

MIAMI, April 30, 2004 – As a freelance make-up artist= in the Film and Television industry, Lisa Jouet Mosenson knows the importance = of creativity and good communication skills.

 

Mosenson, a 46-year-old student in = Miami Dade College’s Hospitality & Tourism program, put those two attributes to work in writ= ing an essay that helped her earn a $5,000 scholarship from the Francisco Foundation.

        &= nbsp;    

 

“They are really gung-ho young ladies,” said Miami -Dade County Commissioner and for= mer state senator Javier Souto, president of the Francisco Foundation. “T= hey want to move ahead, progress in their lives. They’re very smart, very likeable and very determined.”

 

The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Cuban “freedom fighter” Rogelio Gonzalez Corzo, leader of the anti-Castro resistance, who was executed by the island’s Communist regime on April 20th, 1961= at the age of 28. Through the scholarship, the Foundation hopes to commemorate and foster the values held by Francisco and other heroes who sacrificed their l= ives in the name of democracy.

 

 “I’m honored and humble= d to be attached to a scholarship that stands for what Francisco lived and ultimately died for,” said scholarship winner Mosenson.

 

Mosenson, a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, has done make up work for many well known entertainers and is often dispatched to New York City where she has done make-up work for several CNN anchors, celebrity guests, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Democratic Presidential candidate Reverend Al Sharp= ton.

Mosenson is slated to co= mplete her studies at MDC in 2005.

 

“We are very proud of the extraordinary accomplishments achieved by these young ladies,” Miami Dade College President Eduardo Padron said. “They continue to strive for excellence, and symbolize what Miami Dade College is all about---opportunity.”

 

Contestants were selected among students who showed outstanding academic records, leadership skills, community service, and who authored a 1,100-word essay about fr= eedom. In all, eleven Miami Dade College students vied for the coveted scholarship. The winners will receive a one-y= ear scholarship to help defray the price of tuition and books, along with other costs directly related to their course of study.
